Local libraries, school libraries, universities, museums, private collections, hospital libraries. At a certain point in our lives, we may be fortunate enough to have access to any or more than one of these. Depending on how lucky or unlucky we were with our social background and mobility. But there is one of these libraries that has always been there, slightly under-appreciated at times, like a caring grandparent: the public library. But what can we do to make sure they continue their essential service? Well, it is easier than you think.

“I love that magical moment when you cross the threshold: you cease to be a consumer; you are here as a citizen. Free to be yourself, and to pursue your personal interests. Safe in the knowledge that no one is going to ask you to pay; you can just be.”

Ciara Eastell
